The Nuts and Bolts of Applying for Disability

September 9, 2014 by Tracy Law Firm ·

Applying for Social Security disability benefits can be a challenging process. On average, it takes about 6 months for the Social Security Administration to make a decision on your claim. About two-thirds of applicants are denied at the initial application, which often discourages individuals from continuing on with the appeals process. However, if you truly cannot work, appealing the Social Security medical decision is often your best course of action. You will need to file an appeal, called a Request for Reconsideration, within 60 days of receiving the denial from SSA.

If the request for reconsideration is denied, the next step is to request a Social Security Disability hearing. If you live in Minnesota, you will likely have a hearing scheduled 12 months after you initially requested it. All in all, the disability process can take 2 years or more from beginning to end.

Don’t wait until all of your other resources have run out before you begin the application process; start as soon as you think you might be eligible, and call your local Social Services office to find out what kind of programs you may be eligible for while you wait to hear back from Social Security.
